Date Night with Avery
A while back I wrote about the importance of taking my daughter’s on dates. You can read about it here.
I was recently asked what I did on those dates. Since I took Avery on a date last night, I figured it would be a good time to show some pictures and talk about what we do.
1. Make her feel special. No matter what age, everybody likes to feel special. When a date is planned and full of surprises, she can’t hardly stand herself.
2. Join her world. So often when we are at home, we make our kids join us in what we are doing. When we are on a date, I act like a three year old and get excited about what three year olds get excited about.
3. It is about time, not money spent. Our dates are usually very cheap. In fact, most of the time less than $10. But we laugh, run, play, and experience life together.
So with all that said, here is the running list of what we did last night.
- Chick-fil-a, and played
- Went to a park with a big slide!
- Bought bird seed to feed birds
- Went to pet store and played with the pets
- Got ice cream
- Came home and went to bed
What do you do with your kids to make them feel special?

Brent,
I am very, very proud of you for taking the initiative to make my granddaughters feel special. It means a lot for me to see you doing that because I know what it is like to not be treated special.
My prayer is that you will continue to love and cherish them as your daughters, and that they will experience Christ’s love in their hearts at the appropriate time in their lives.
Love, Mom
Thanks for sharing Brent. I’m definitely planning on starting this with Maddie in the next few months when she is 2.
One thing I do in the mornings on our way to day care is sing songs with Maddie. I used to try to make sure she had something to play with or a book for her to flip through so I could listen to the radio, but I have found recently that we really have a special time during that 10-15 minute ride when I’m focused on singing her songs and making her laugh. And of course, it helps put me in a more positive perspective for my work day even when we are running late or she had a grumpy morning!
It interesting how much fun we can have with our kids if we will just get on their level. It is more enjoyable for us both.
Can’t wait to here what you and Maddie do on your date.
“she can’t hardly stand herself.”????
Where were you raised, Oklahoma?
Oh yeah….
