Somebody Testify

by brent on May 6, 2009

A few weeks ago we did Cardboard testimonies at NorthWood.  The impact was massive for the congregation and those who gave their testimonies on cardboard.

God is Good!
And they have conquered him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony… Rev 12:11

My Pastor

by brent on January 26, 2009

bro-croswellThis is my Pastor, Bro.  James Croswell. From the time I can remember to my mid teens, he was my pastor.

It was under his ministry that I was saved and baptized.  His son Josh was my best friend.  He took us to church camp every year. He woke me up every morning at church camp singing “I love you Brent, oh yes I do…..” He drove me and Josh around when we had our lawn mowing business.  He taught us how to do a job right when we were lazy.  I still can remember a sermon he preached when I was a punk kid on Psalm 139. He was full of  passion when he quoted the scripture, “You are fearfully and wonderfully made.”

Bro. Croswell lost his battle with cancer and went home to be with Jesus this past Thursday.

As I have thought about him over the past few days, here are some lessons I have learned from his life.

  1. Care about People:  I have never met someone who loved people more the Bro. Croswell.  He knew the sheep under his care and truly cared for them.
  2. Take care to laugh and smile: Bro. Croswell had a contagious laugh and smile.  He had fun with life and he made those around him have fun as well.
  3. Care for your family: I spent A LOT of time at the Croswell’s growing up.  Brother and Sister Croswell raised their family in grace.  Their house was a very safe place, and the proof is that all of their children are grown and walking with Jesus and involved in ministry.
  4. Ministry is a life not a season: Bro . Croswell lived a full life of ministry.  He mad it to the end.  He did not crash and burn, he did not have any moral failures.  He just continued in his call, even to the point of preaching while he was battling cancer.

I am humbled and honored that I get to be a part of such a great man’s memorial service tomorrow.

Pray for the Croswell Family.  This is their second loss in a year.  They are hurting, but comforted in the grace of a redeeming God.

Marriage Portrait – Bump

by brent on January 20, 2009

A couple of weeks ago I showed you a picture of my office during a shoot for an upcoming bump. Here is the final product  we are using for a series on marriage. The series is called “The Marriage Portrait.”

Marriage Portrait Bump from Chris Johns on Vimeo.

I am becoming quite the hand model. You can see these digits in action here too. I didn’t know my hands were that attractive…. Oh wait they are not, I am just the sorry sucker that is around when they need a picture or video!

I feel used.

New Office Decor

by brent on January 6, 2009

camera-officeSo yesterday while I was in our strategic planning meeting, Chris, our video/lighting guru turned my office into a production room to make a video bump for the series we are launching this weekend.  I had no clue he was doing it, so I was a bit surprised when I walked in and and saw my office look like this. 1 Camera, 2 light kits, 2 mics, and a reflector.

Chris builds all of our bumps and does all the editing for our videos.  He is incredible.  God check out some of his work on his vimeo channel.

I will post the bump when it gets done.

Ass or Sheep?

by brent on December 11, 2008

Input Needed.

So we are going to sing “What Child is This” this weekend at NorthWood. Here is the start of the 2nd verse.

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?

During rehearsals last night I realized that anyone under 40 is going to snicker when we sing it. So we went on a quest to find a one syllable animal that would have been at the manger. We came up with sheep.

So the question is, do we sing ass and let everyone try to hide their laughter, or do we change the words and sing sheep?

So this may be the only time you have permission to use what can be offensive language in the comments.

Should we sing Ass or Sheep?

Why I Love NorthWood

by brent on November 13, 2008

In my opinion we have excellent worship services at NorthWood (exhibit a).  Clearly, this is important to me since I am the Worship Pastor, but lots of churches have great worship service.  I don’t know of another church who focuses on impacting the world as much as NorthWood.

Here is a short about how we started working around the world.

Why do you love your church?

From Where I Stand: Home Makeover Kickoff

by brent on October 9, 2008

During the Home Makeover service tonight, I snuck out my phone right before the prayer time and took this pic.  I love it.  I love it because at NorthWood, what we do on the stage will never be considered “church.”  Our definition of  “church” is when we get outside of our walls. This weekend we will get outside all walls and continue to do all we can to see the Kingdom of God advanced in Haltom City.

I had a blast worshiping with you tonight NorthWood. And can’t wait to serve with you this weekend.

A True Rockstar

by brent on August 21, 2008

This is Derek Reed.

Tomorrow he will board a plane at 7am to move to New York to go to school. He will be attending The King’s College in Manhattan.  The school is actually in the Empire State Building… how cool is that.

When I came to NorthWood he was a 14 year-old emo kid  who played a little bass.  He is now a pro-level bass player with more potential than you can shake a stick at.

He loves God, can lay down a serious bass groove, and is disciplined enough to overcome any obstacle in his way. I can’t wait to see how God is going to use him.

Have a blast in New York.  We are proud of you.

If you know Derek, give him a shout out.

New Sermon Series

by brent on August 8, 2008

I am pumped up for our new series starting this weekend called Broke.  With all the economic down-turn, everyone is scared they are going broke…. but maybe God is just breaking us of all our idols? If you are going to be around the DFW area, you should definitely stop by.

Here is the pdf of the mailer we sent out.

And yes, I can now put “hand model” on my resume. The hand pulling out the empty pocket is mine…. If only it were not true to life!

What sermon series are you doing?
