I am More Childish than my Children

by brent on June 17, 2009

p2120023When my kids go crazy and decide to challenge everything I say, throw fits, and do things their own way, here is the process I go through.

  1. Oh no you didn’t.
  2. Frustration
  3. Develop a plan to eliminate the negative behavior – still very frustrated.
  4. Realize that I rebel against God just as much or more than they rebel against me. I challenge everything he says, throw fits, and do things my own way.
  5. Humbled and regain patience.

My kids and my wife are gifts from God that constantly reveal that I am broke and in desperate need of a saviour.

Irony

by brent on December 15, 2008

Elliana was throwing a fit while wearing this bib and I couldn’t help but snap the picture.

p2120023

It is a great reminder. Consistency of message and life is crucial.  It is painfully obvious when they are not.

Even though your facebook profile, shirt, or bumper sticker says you are a follower of Christ, you still have to live it out.

How Do You Do Santa?

by brent on December 3, 2008

Your input is needed for this one.

The situation:

  • News Flash: Santa is not real.
  • The Scripture is clear.  We are not to lie or bear false witness. We are also told to let our yes be yes and our no be no

The Problem

How do you reconcile these two things when your 3 year old is asking very detailed question about Santa? I am not trying to be holier-than- thou or uber-spiritual.  Kari and I are just having a problem telling un-truths about Santa when we assure our girls all the time, “Mommy and Daddy always tell you the truth.”

What do you tell your kids?

A Sure Fire Way to End a Date…

by brent on November 4, 2008

A sick kid.

Every other Tuesday night is date night for me and Kari. Tonight we did not go. Avery has a fever (101.1), but has no symptoms like a stufy nose, upset tummy, ear ache, etc.  Not sure what is going on, but I am sure that we will find out tomorrow.

So tonight, no date, we will sit home and watch election coverage. Boo.

An Eventful Weekend, Happy Birthday Avery

by brent on November 2, 2008

This weekend was very busy, but so much fun.  Fridays are our family fun day.  This week, we started the pre-celebration for Avery’s 3rd Birthday as well as a family costume party and some trunk or treating.  You can see the pics and timeline at Kari’s blog.

Saturday, our sweet Avery turned 3.  We are full of joy for all that she has brought to our lives.  She makes us laugh, steals our heart, and makes us beg for grace all at the same time.  We love you Avery.

Kari did an incredible job with her “Goldie Locks and the Three Bears” birthday barty. Go here to see all the pics of her birthday.

My Wife is More Popular Than Me

by brent on October 7, 2008

I am getting a complex.

About an hour ago, I twittered:

My wife rocks. I have been sick so she just brought me jamba juice with a wheat grass shot to work.

My twitter account automatically updates my facebooks status.  Within 1hour, 5 6 people have replied.  Most of which comment how they agree my wife rocks.  I twitter about my life nothing.  I twitter about my wife and a gold rush of comments come in

Since I have started Worshiply, I have received more positive feedbackabout Kari’s blog than my own. I have had full-grown men come up and tell me they love reading kari’s blog…. but nothing about mine.

The only thing I have going for me is that I still have more facebook friends than she does.

Where’s the love?

A Weekend for Rest and Growth

by brent on October 2, 2008

To make a long story still long, but worth reading…

God has been really working on my own personal spiritual growth.  A couple weeks ago our Team (small group) decided to go through Richard Foster’s  Celebration of Discipline.  As I started reading the book again, God really started shining some light on my soul.  I have never been more consistent in my own personal worship time, but conviction upon conviction arose as I realized that I have not been actively pursuing disciplines and postures in my life to make sure that moment-by-moment I am following the King in obedience. The rule of the kingdom of God in our life was never meant to be isolated to a 30-60 minute window of time in the morning. But throughout all of life.  I have been reading all the spiritual formation stuff I can get my hands on, including Dallas Willard’s The Spirit of Disciplines.

In a very providential way, right before I left work on Monday I decided to go to the Renovare web site.  Renovare is the organization started by Richard Foster to aid people in their spiritual growth….all the heavy weights in this field are a part of his organization.  When I got to the site, I realized that they are having a conference in Houston this weekend.

Long story finally concluded… This weekend (Thursday-Saturday) Kari and I are going to Houston for a Renovare Conference.  I am pumped.  We are going to get away, be by ourselves.. without kids, stay in a swank hotel (thanks expedia for screwing up on our cruise and giving us a nice credit!) and go to a conference that will spur us on to our own spiritual growth.

Pray for us that God will give us a refreshing time away, but at the same time, that we would be challenged to grow in our walks with the Lord.

I don’t know if I will post about the conference while we are there, but expect some posts next week.  I will try to update twitter as we go through the conference.

Girls, Girls, Girls – and Maybe a Boy?

by brent on September 13, 2008

We have two girls.

Our great friends, the Borns, have two girls.

When we get together, it is all girls.

Yesterday, Josh and I took the girls to Grapefest.

When we got back to their house, we had a dance party.

When you have all girls, you do girl things.  3 years ago I would have been embarrassed to be a full-grown man dancing around a living room.  Now it is part of my life that I have learned to embrace.

But there is hope of my masculinity returning.

The Borns just had a baby boy this week.

Maybe we will too!

Now it is your turn to weigh in.

Do you think we will have a boy or girl?
